A FRAEW is a specialist fire risk assessment focused specifically on the materials and construction of a building's external walls, including any cladding, insulation, balconies, and attachments. It helps determine the risk of fire spread over or within the external wall system and informs decisions about remediation and interim safety measures.

This assessment is often required where concerns exist about combustible materials used in the façade or cladding, particularly in buildings over 11 metres in height, or where residents, lenders, or insurers request confirmation of fire safety compliance.
